Soap Myth: pH balanced soaps are better for your skin

This is false. While the normal secretions of our skin are generally more acidic, our skin is not really affected by the pH of skin care products. Why is that? Well, handcrafted soap is alkaline and when we wash with it we temporarily remove some of the skin’s acidity. However, after bathing the skin begins re-secreting the acid mantle immediately and it returns to it’s normal pH, it's super cool that way. So if the pH of skin care products will not change the natural pH of skin secretions, then why all the hype about "pH balanced"? It’s a buzz word; a marketing ploy to sell products.

The fact is that THE mildest cleanser that you can use on your body - properly formulated handmade soap - has a high pH of around 8-10.

The real question is: What about the damage done to skin caused by the additives in those pH balanced cleansing products to make them that way? The best and most accurate test of a good mild soap is how it feels on your skin.
