The Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the understanding, preservation and use of California Native Wild Flowers and Plants. The Foundation was established in 1960 and is located on 22 acres of canyon land in the northeast corner of the San Fernando Valley.
Who is Theodore Payne? He was a pioneering Los Angeles nurseryman, horticulturist and conservationist who is widely considered to be the father of the native plant movement in California. The Foundation preserves his legacy and carries on his work. They educate, promote, preserve and propagate native flora. They have a small nursery and general store, where they make available among other locally sourced goods, Mountain Girl Soap.
To help you grow your native plant habitat, we highly recommend their seed mixes which you can purchase on-line. You can also pick up plants available at their nursery. We planted some Lupinus succulentus (arroyo lupine) seeds from Theodore Payne this year and they are coming up everywhere in our garden.
